Kyle Nikkel will begin his first year with East High as the Varsity Quarterbacks coach. He comes from a strong background of coaching responsibilities. Last year he was Sioux City North Middle School's JH football coach and the year before was the quarterback coach at Sergeant Bluff-Luton, where he helped lead them to one of their first playoff births in years. Alongside coaching football, Kyle is on the men's basketball staff coaching JV and Varsity basketball at East High.
Kyle's playing career consists of both high school and college experiences. At Pella Christian High School, he was a three year start at Quarterback setting multiple records and landing a 2nd Team All-State honor and Shrine Bowl selection. As a 6'7" pocket-passer, he was highly recruited by Division I and II schools all over the Midwest after throwing over 4500 yards and 50 TDs in his career. Even so, Morningside won his heart and within a few weeks as a Freshmen, he won over the starting quarterback spot. During his first game against Midland, Kyle landed a Hail Mary pass to win the game. This momentum helped the Mustangs stampede to winning the Conference for the first time in 7 years and making it back to playoffs. Kyle's football career only lasted a year before he flip-flopped to playing basketball, but he was able to accumulate 1400 yards and 18 TDs with a 60% completion rate in only 8 games.
Currently, Coach Nikkel is teaching STEAM labs at North Middle School and his fiancé is joining East High School next year as a Special Education co-teacher. In his free time, he enjoys playing golf, pick-up basketball, and hanging with friends and family.
